Different ways to Browser-Test your Website

Posted by Otyg On janvier - 26 - 2010

It’s often difficult to Browser-test websites.

IE6 ,IE7, IE8,  Firefox2, Firefox3, Opera, Safari, Chrome … it’s a painfull and harsh task to test them all.

I searched for a long time about standalone IE version, it was not so simple at all !

Here is a list of different ways to test your website on these browsers.

Browser Shots [BrW] :

Free. Take screenshots of your website on different browsers. It’s very low by moments. Lots of Browsers known !

Adobe BrowserLab [BrW]:

Free. Works with Adobe Air. Take screenshots of your website on different browsers. It’s faster than Browser Shots. Only IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari (only Win Xp & OS X)

Litmus [BrW] :

Paid service. Take screenshots of your website on different browsers. Compatibility Reports. IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Flock, Camino, Netscape, Opera, Sea Monkey (Windows & OS X)

IETester [StD-W] :

Free. In one window all IE browser (5.5 to 8 RC1). Some bugs with JS. Bugs with IE7. Very  practical !

Interner Explorer Collection [StD-W] :

Free. All IE browser versions : 1 to 8 !  Includes IE Dev Bar.

Mozilla Firefox Collection [StD-W] :

Free. Firefox browser versions : 2.0 to 3.6 !  Includes Firebug, Webdevelopper add-ons and FlashPlayer 10.

Multi-Safari [StD-A] :

Free. Permit multiple install of Safari in the same OS. Different Safari available within OS MAC version. (ie: for OS X 10.4 only Safari  2.0 to 3.04)

Spoon (before known as Xenocode) [BrW] :

Free. (more infos, not working properly ?)

Microsoft Expression Web SuperPreview [StD-W] :

Free. Only IE 6 to 8. More with Expression App.

BrowsrCamp [BrW] :

Paid service. Lots of Browsers known. Take screenshots in wanted dimensions.

All Browsers Archives [StD] :

Free. All Browser installation versions.

Netrenderer [BrW] :

Free. Take screenshots of your website only under IE 5.5 to 8.

Browsera [BrW]:

Paid service. Take screenshots under IE, Firefox, Opera. Bug reports. Logs with  Script Errors. Compare different layouts.

Lytebox

Posted by Otyg On décembre - 12 - 2009

Lytebox is an alternative by Markus F. Hay at The well known Light Box Java Script code to manage pictures and gallery on web pages.

The purpose was to write a self-contained object that eliminated the dependency of prototype.js, effects.js, and scriptaculous.js.

No more updates since 2007… but  still up !

About target= »_blank » problem

Posted by Otyg On juillet - 20 - 2009

I was searching about target= »_blank » problem on Google.

Finally I’ve found two awesome and well discussed articles.

Firstly: from Cyber codeur. (FR). This is an old article but always up about target= »_blank » problem with W3C norms and coding.

Secondly: from (yes again =] ) Perishable Press (EN) : an unobtrusive JS solution (but a bit difficult to understand for people like me)

Around this target= »_blank » problem, I was able to ask 3 questions:

  1. Transitional / Strict coding for valid W3C norms (being valid or strict coding)
  2. Open a new page Vs usability (How to return to previous page with a new window  ? [e.g.])
  3. Inline coding Vs Script interpreted language (first more quick but not valid)

This article from Manuel Catez (FR) is a good summary of this problem.

Enjoy !

The Power of HTML 5 and CSS 3

Posted by Otyg On juillet - 20 - 2009

With the coming of HTML5 and CCS3, we must think a different way to code webpage.

I often see « div coding » as weird as « table coding ». The reason ?  The most of time, non well CSS construction.

With the new era of HTML/CSS, say goodbye to  « cascading <div> »!

In this aticle, discover how HTML/CSS coding changes.

Read more from Perishable Press, and thanks Jeff Starr.

In my opinion, HTML5/ CSS3 turns into XML style coding.
